MeshMixer keyboard shortcuts for dental application

Reading time: 7 minProtocolo MeshMixer

Modelling a provisional restoration involves dozens of alternations between selection, transformation and sculpting. The efficiency of the procedure depends to a considerable extent on command fluency.

Rationale for their use

Each menu access represents three to five seconds, but the material cost is not temporal but attentional: interrupting visual reading of the model compromises the quality of the result. Across a complete case, the cumulative effect is significant.

Simultaneous memorisation of the full set is not recommended. It is preferable to incorporate the commands relevant to the current stage of work until they become automatic.

Navigation and display

CommandFunctionApplication
SpaceHotboxRadial menu at the cursor position
Ctrl+Shift+OObject BrowserObject management, visibility and hierarchy
Left dragTumbleScene rotation
ScrollZoomApproach to the finish line
Middle buttonPanDisplacement without rotation
QCycle display modesNormals / Color / Wireframe alternation
The Hotbox as priority command

Holding Space deploys a radial menu at the exact cursor position, eliminating travel to the sidebar. It constitutes the command with the highest return relative to the memorisation effort required.

Selection

Selection constitutes the operative foundation of the program: virtually every relevant tool acts upon previously selected faces.

CommandFunction
SEnter Select Faces mode
Ctrl+ASelect all
EExpand to connected surface
< / >Contract / expand by one ring of faces
Shift+dragSubtract faces from the selection

The contraction and expansion commands merit particular attention: they permit incremental regularisation of an irregular boundary, a procedure substantially more precise than direct manual tracing.

Operations on the selection

CommandToolClinical application
FErase & FillVirtual extraction with socket closure
XDiscardFace removal without filling
DExtrudeThickness generation: wings, retentions
Shift+DExtractShell extraction from a region
RRemeshUniformisation of triangle density
Shift+RReduceReduction of triangle count
BSmooth BoundaryRegularisation of the selection boundary

Transformation and alignment

CommandFunction
TTransform — translation, rotation and scaling
Shift+TSoft Transform — deformation with progressive falloff
NAlign to Target — alignment between objects
Shift+YSeparate Shells — segmentation into independent objects

Separate Shells is indispensable for individualised export of each element at case completion.

Sculpting

CommandFunction
2Surface Brush — surface-level action
3Volume Brush — volume addition and subtraction
4Stamp
[ / ]Decrease / increase brush diameter
Shift+SToggle Symmetry
RToggle Refinement
BToggle Hold Boundary
GToggle Preserve Groups
AToggle Attract
Preservation of the marginal contour

When sculpting in proximity to the finish line, activating B prevents the brush from displacing the boundary. This precaution determines the difference between a restoration with adequate marginal adaptation and one requiring rework.

Repair and finalisation

CommandFunction
IInspector — detection of holes, isolated components and non-manifold geometry
Ctrl+DOffset of the selection — basis of internal relief
Ctrl+ZUndo

The Inspector should constitute the final verification prior to any export. An unclosed mesh represents the most frequent cause of slicer failure.

Method of acquisition

Passive memorisation of a list is of limited efficacy. The inverse procedure is recommended: while working on actual cases, each time the menu is used, identify the equivalent keyboard command. Within a week of clinical activity, the frequently used commands become established.

Master the complete workflow

This article addresses a single stage. The Protocolo MeshMixer course develops the workflow in full — 24 modules from the outset through to clinical 3D printing, with documented clinical cases, STL files and 100% free software.
